This post is a bit different from the usual food posts, but I really wanted to share with you my amazing birthday treat at Luton Hoo.
It was my birthday last month and as the Big Man and I weren't spending Christmas together he decided to take me on a little getaway.
I find that in the UK you can get everything, the busy city and just 30 min away the beautiful green country side. I have never seen such green fields like the ones in the UK, it is breath-taking.
The Big Man booked a night at Luton Hoo, a beautiful country home that reminds me of Downton Abbey. Luton Hoo is a 5 star hotel on the border of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
There have been quite a few movies filmed here in different places such as the country club, the magnificent entrance, the stairs and even in the room we stayed in!
Do you remember a very young Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral? The scene where he hides inside the wardrobe when the bride and groom go inside the room? That was our room, and let me tell you, it was something special.
Let me start at the beginning. Driving up to the mansion, the beautiful fields, the golf course, the partridges.. It was magical. We had a parking space with our name on it, someone came to take our bags and after checking in they took us to our room and the nice receptionist showed us the room (and where Hugh Grant hid in the movie. The wardrobe is so big we wouldn't have missed it anyways).
The bedroom was big, comfy and cosy and the bathroom had a massive bath tub/jacuzzi where I could have stayed all afternoon but we had booked the Spa so we had to leave. The bathroom was full of little complimentary bottles of Molton Brown that I couldn't wait to use!
The spa is not in the mansion but in the country house where the golf house is. This was many years ago the stables and it is now listed a Grade II. They have redone it all and it now holds the spa, the country club and Adam's Brasserie where we had dinner. It is just a few minutes walk or the hotel can provide a taxi that can take you there and back for free.
The spa had wood beams on the ceiling and it was overlooking the estate's woodlands. We relaxed in the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room before going back for a drink and get ready for dinner.
Luton Hoo has 2 restaurants, one inside the mansion, Whernher restaurant, and the other one, Adam's Brasserie, by the spa which is a bit more relaxed.
Let me tell you about the food, my favourite thing. We had a splendid dinner. As a starter I had duck rillettes and The Big Man had warm goat cheese with pancetta.
As a main we both went for the burger as it sounded delicious. For dessert we got a black treacle tart and some fresh mint tea and they got me a little plate of sweets for my birthday which was so nice of them.
Since we had dinner early and the room looked so comfy, we ordered drinks and watched a movie in the comfy sofas. I had to try the bath as I couldn't resist the jacuzzi and all the Molton Brown things. I felt so relaxed I fell asleep as soon as the movie finished!
All in all, we had an amazing day at Luton Hoo and we wished we had stayed one more day.
